Speaking of cake, I have this obsession with pie. It’s not a new thing by any means – pie has always made me happy – but recent events have pushed it to a whole new level. It’s taken on a life of its own. So to speak.
Two things that have brought pie to the forefront of my mind more and more often in recent months:
ABC premiered a new series this year called Pushing Daisies. It revolves around Ned the Pie Maker (played by the irresistible Lee Pace), who at a young age discovers that he has the ability to bring things back from the dead with a touch of his finger. The only catch is that a second touch will kill them for good. Grown-up Ned becomes a pie maker, opens his own shop called the Pie Hole, and runs a detective business with Emerson Cod (Chi McBride) on the side. Their unconventional methods involve bringing murdered people back to life long enough to ask who killed them, then “solving” the crime and collecting the reward money.
One day he and Emerson take on a case of a young murdered woman, which turns out to be Ned’s childhood sweetheart, Charlotte “Chuck” Charles (Anna Friel). Once he brings her back to life, he can’t bear to send her back. The only catch? Ned can’t touch Chuck ever again, or he will kill her again – this time for good.
Basically, it’s super-cute, funny, witty, extremely quirky, and sometimes heart-wrenching all at the same time. There’s beautiful sets, gorgeous costumes, amusing storylines, and Lee Pace. What’s not to like?
So, long story short, I love pie anyway, but now I associate pie with Lee Pace and the show in general, both of which I enjoy quite a bit. So that kicked the pie (and Lee Pace) obsession up a notch.
Second thing that increased my love of pie exponentially: I have a friend who actually IS a real live pie maker. I mean, he makes other things too, but he sent me a list of all the pies he’s made in culinary school and it just cancelled everything else out in my mind. Probably at least until I actually go see him and get to sample some of the many delicious things he’s made thus far. But nevertheless, it added to the pie obsession. Thanks.
All this to say that I really love pie and to shamelessly plug the second season of Pushing Daisies this fall. You can watch some episodes right here and read episode recaps here. And watch it on ABC when it comes back in the fall!

I just realized that the title is my favorite dessert and my favorite flower! I didn’t do it on purpose… I just love them both that much
